Academic Information

 

Academic excellence is a given at Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School.  Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School is 1 of 50 private schools to be awarded the 2013 National Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education.

Our Students are prepared not only academically but spiritually, socially, and intellectually to meet future challenges and to acheive their goals.  The Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School difference is that we go above and beyond outstanding academics to bring out the best in each child.

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School has met the requirements established by the AdvancEd Accreditation Commission and Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement: SACS/CASI.

 

School Curriculum

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the Benchmarks and Standards for the Diocese of Birmingham as well as the Alabama Course of Study.  The curriculum is adapted by the faculty and principal to achieve best practices which meet the needs of our student body.  It includes the following subject areas:

Religion:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study, and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. Grade 2 (First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion) and Grade 8 (Confirmation) are Sacramental grades, and  some class time is devoted to preparation of the Sacraments. Confirmation candidates are also required to attend classes outside of the normal school day. Students in Grades 2-8 are required to attend a class Mass during the week, along with attending a school Mass on Fridays and Holy Days. The text presently being used in Grades K-8 is Loyola University Press, CHRIST OUR LIFE.

Mathematics:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study, and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, which is based on the Alabama State Course of Study. Beginning in Grade 4, students can qualify to be placed in an Advanced Mathematics track, which culminates in Algebra being taught in Grade 8. The texts presently being used are  Pearson, ENVISION MATH in grades K-5, Glencoe/McGraw Hill, MATH CONNECTS in grades 6-8, and Holt,  ALGEBRA 1 in Algebra class.

Reading/Literature:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study, and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, which are based on the Alabama State Course of Study. At Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School, Reading or Literature is taught in Grades K-8.  Our students are exposed to a wide range of styles and genres of Literature. In Grade 8, students can qualify to be placed in an Advanced Literature class. The text used in  Grades K-5 is Scott Foresman, READING STREET, and the Literature text used in Grades 6-8 is Holt, ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE. In addition to using the textbook, students in Grades 6-8 are also required to read novels for class.

Language Arts:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study, and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, which is based on the Alabama State Course of Study. At Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School, Language Arts/English/Grammar is taught in Grades K-8. The instructional material used for Language Arts in Grades K-5 is contained within the Reading series, READING STREET. The text used in Grades 6-8 is Holt, ELEMENTS OF LANGUAGE. Supplemental Grammar and Vocabulary texts are also used in Grades 6-8. Spelling lessons in Grades K-5 and Phonics material in Grades K-3 are also contained within  READING STREETS series. Penmanship is taught in Grades K-5 and the text used is Zaner/Bloser, HANDWRITING.

Science:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study, and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, which is based on the Alabama State Course of Study. While students in Grades K-5 are offered a general course in Science, beginning in Grade 6 students are offered a year each focusing on Earth (Grade 6), Life (Grade 7), and Physical (Grade 8) Science. The texts used are Scott Foresman, SCIENCE in Grades K-5 and Holt, SCIENCE in Grades 6-8.

Social Studies:

 

Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School follows the curriculum, course of study and benchmarks mandated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, which are based on the Alabama State Course of Study. Students in Grades K-3 receive a general Social Studies course. Students then focus on Alabama History (Grade 4), and United States History (Grades 5 and 6). In Grade 7, the students receive one semester each of Geography and Civics, while the year long focus in Grade 8 is World History. The texts used are MacMillan/McGraw Hill (Grades K and 3), Scott Foresman (Grades 1, 2, 5, 6), Clairmont (Grade 4), Glencoe (Grade 7), and Prentice Hall (Grade 8).
